Content:
- Ruby Reds 5" Charm Squares 8 Colours, 1 x Fat Quarter Lipari Pirrerra
- Pattern and instructions
Finished size: W7.5" x D7.5" x H2.5" / W19 cm x D19 cm x H6 cm.

In the designer's words: Helen Butcher discusses the importance of colour, tone and weave in choosing fabric for her patchwork designs.

Fabric widths
Our fabrics are cut from a 54” / 137 cm bolt width - that’s up to 23% wider than 'standard'. This means that our cut lengths and pre-cut packs provide a surprising amount of fabric!
Oakshott Pre-cuts
Because they’re cut from 54” / 137 cm wide bolts, our cuts are up to a third bigger than 'standard'.
Our pre-cuts come in Fat 8ths, Fat Quarter, Half Metre Block or 1 Metre packs. 5” Charm Squares are available for individual collections.
Caring for your shot cottons - before, during and after sewing
We use the best quality reactive dyes which provide the best fastness to light, rubbing and especially to washing. This however cannot be guaranteed and as many quilts are future heritage projects, we recommend dry cleaning.
Our fabrics are soft finished with steam after production and most quilters do not prewash them. If prewashing is preferred, then only by hand in clean water at 30C, please.
Our fabrics are pure finished ie they don’t contain binders / wax / starch etc. The handle will therefore change very little when the fabric is washed. They may however fray slightly more than ‘finished’ fabrics and to minimise this, we recommend overlocking cut edges prior to washing.
Do not machine wash and do not tumble dry. Dark and light colours should be washed separately. Avoid optical whiteners and chlorine based cleaning products. Gently towel dry and iron whilst damp. Allow for a shrinkage of 3-5%.
If you’re not familiar with Oakshott, here are a few hints and tips to help you navigate our site more easily. If you don't find the answer to your question here, please get in touch.

WHAT ARE ‘SHOT’ COTTONS?
Each colourway is achieved by selecting a base colour warp and marrying it with a complementary or contrasting weft thread. This produces our trademark ‘shot’ effect, when the colour appears to shimmer and change depending on how the light falls. They appear to have depth and movement.
Many of our collections - Lakes, Lipari, Ruby Reds, Scandinavia and Sorbet - combine a single warp shade with a rainbow of weft threads. This ensures that the colours mix, match and tone happily together and it makes for easy colour combining.

Fabric pack and pattern for Tutti Frutti Cot Quilt designed by Sandie Lush.
Sandie is primarily known for traditional wholecloth patterns and quilts. Here however, she takes relatively simple motifs and repeats them to create larger patterns.
"The lovely Alpine range inspired me to make the cot quilt as well as a cushion (image 2). I thought it would be interesting to make a pattern that follows simple patchwork shapes, but also looks good as a wholecloth quilt.
The colours reminded me of ice-cream!"
Content:
- 1 x Alpine Fat 8ths Pack, 8 colours
- 0.5 m Alpine 02 Murren
- 0.5 m Alpine 06 St Moritz
- Pattern and instructions *
* PDF supplied with your order confirmation.
Please note: fabric for backing is not included. Sandie recommends Alpine Murren 02 which produced the patchwork colour-change effect on the reverse (image 3).
The pattern offers a number of design possibilities by playing with the arrangement of the motif within the boxes and the piecing of the different fabric shades.
Fabrics are 100% mercerised shot cottons - each colourway combines a base colour warp with a complementary or contrasting weft thread. This produces the trademark ‘shot’ effect when colours appear to shimmer and ‘move’ depending on how the light falls. It lends extra depth and texture to your project.
Level of difficulty: intermediate.
Sandie describes her passion for hand quilting wholecloth quilts, and her specialism in the Welsh wholecloth quilt tradition. Read her story and see her work.

Template only for Valentine's Mini Quilt designed by Sarah Ashford of Sarah Ashford Studio. For brief instructions, see below.
You will need:
- 5 Fat 8ths from a Ruby Reds Fat 8ths Pack
- Grey for the background - Sarah suggests Colourshott Vintage Silver, Colourshott Charcoal, or Scandinavia Stockholm
This design lends itself equally well to table mats, cushions, wall hangings, quilts and more - designs that last the year round.
To construct the mini quilt, join
- Block A to block B
- Block C to block D
- Blocks A and B to blocks C and D
Sarah provides some hints and tips for successful Foundation Paper Piecing:
- All seam allowances 1/4” unless otherwise stated
- Make sure you print your pattern pieces at ‘Actual Size’ with no scaling on your printer
- Shorten your stitch length to allow for easier removal of papers
- An ‘Add a Quarter’ ruler is really useful to get accurate seam allowances
- Make sure you cover all the seam allowance with your fabric. Hold it up to the light to check
- Press as you go
- Backstitch at the beginning and end of each line to reinforce the seam
- Happy stitching!
In the designer's words: Sarah Ashford discusses her passion for quilting and patchwork, her sources of inspiration and the drivers behind her work.

Fabric pack and pattern for Wholecloth Cushion designed by Sandie Lush.
Sandie is primarily known for traditional wholecloth patterns and quilts. Here however, she takes relatively simple motifs and repeats them to create larger patterns. Our Alpines inspired her to make the cushion as well as the Tutti Frutti Cot Quilt (image 3).
"The colours reminded me of ice cream!
I thought it would be interesting to make a pattern that follows simple patchwork shapes, but also looks good as a wholecloth quilt."
