|One of the great things about being an Artist is the licence to work In Series - this is a particular variety of laziness, as you don't need a new idea every morning. Most days, I can just go into the workshop and say "what if I do this a little differently". So for about 10 years my default has been Trees. Still is, a lot of days.
Then every now and again a little spark hits my brain and a new series happens... So, Interpolations...
My brother Simeon died almost exactly a year ago... He was an inspiration, an aggravation, an alcoholic; bullied as a child (I'm the elder, could not save him always), my wee brother, for whom I lay awake and worried, but whom I could not force to be happy... He was French for most of his life and slid into Frenchness a little sideways... Interpolation.
He was also a mathematician and a constructor of tessellations. He made moving images in computers. This connects with the way I work in cloth in a sideways sort of way... Interpolation again.
So these little pieces are a sort of homage, but also a record of how we inspired and loved and irritated each other for so many years. I cut the fabric ground and Interpolate blocks, improvisation, without plan or finished concept... Sometimes they fail...
