Oakshott is a family business run by Michael and Rose Oakshott supplying quilters, sewers and textile artists the world over since 2003. Our expertise goes back much further, however.
Growing up in South India, Michael learnt at first hand through a family business the intricacies of fabric weaving and dying. His mother Julia – a passionate quilter – would search in vain for non-printed fabrics in vibrant colours. Knowing that only shot cottons could provide the answer with their depth of colour and soft feel, they set about developing their own range in a weight suitable for quilting. The launch of their original 27 colours generated a wave of excitement around the quilting world.
Oakshott is like a beautiful set of paints – it's beyond beautiful and brings something remarkable to any project. Melissa Reilly
Oakshott fabrics were originally handwoven but have now been upgraded. They are sourced today from carefully selected mills using the latest production equipment. The family work closely to develop the distinctive colour ranges and pack mixes for which Oakshott is known.
Your cottons are astonishing in their depth of color and luster. I'm finding a whole new dimension in plain vibrant colors with a sheen that never quits. Laureen Bedell
Our fabrics are woven from the finest grade shot cottons.
- Fibres are gas mercerised for a smooth, lustrous finish
- 2-ply yarns for both warp and weft give additional strength
- Fabrics are free from dressing
- Weave density provides an ideal weight
I wanted you to know how much I liked working with your fabrics. They're fantastic. Michelle Wilkie
The yarns are dyed in a fully automated, computer-controlled chamber to produce an even application of colour. Stringent controls facilitate excellent colour batching.
The best quality dyes and soft water are used to produce a superior colour strike. All dyes meet international standards and all waste is ecologically treated. These exclusive yarns are then carefully woven to our specification on fine quality modern looms.
The colours are so much better than I anticipated. My creative thoughts are flowing. Wendy Dorey
Exclusive colours with extra dimension
We design our collections entirely in-house, so each and every shade is unique to Oakshott. An individual colourway is achieved by selecting a base colour warp and marrying it with a complementary or contrasting weft thread. This produces the trademark ‘shot’ effect in which the colour appears to shimmer and change depending on how the light falls.
Lakes, Lipari, Ruby Reds and Scandinavia combine a single base warp shade with a rainbow of weft threads. Quilters and sewers can therefore mix, match and tone with complete confidence.
I'm so excited – all the fabrics are beautiful. Kelly Hitchman-Powers
Fabric widths: more for your money
All Oakshott fabrics are 54” wide – that's significantly wider than 'standard' bolts. This also means that cut lengths and pre-cut packs provide a surprising amount of fabric!
Relationships with our weavers and their communities are built on years of cooperation and mutual respect. We require them to comply with relevant laws, particularly relating to working hours and conditions, health and safety, rates of pay and minimum age of employment. We strive to ensure that our fabrics are environmentally friendly, both in use and in the manufacturing process.
We aim to dispatch consumer orders received by 1pm the same working day. We ship anywhere in the world and deliveries are routinely received within 48 hours. We know from a wealth of customer feedback that the vast majority of our customers are delighted with their purchases.
You are the most responsive merchant I've ever encountered. Elizabeth Walters
