"A Child's Bliss" by Hilde van Schaardenburg
A Child’s Bliss
Quilt 2010 50 x 50 cm
"The atmosphere of the days before Christmas touches something deep in me, the memory of a blissful experience, more than 60 years ago. I was about four years old; it was Christmas’ Eve, December 24. Not until the evening did I get to see the Christmas tree, after waiting the whole day. Then the door opened and what I saw there was a room filled with light, so much lighter than the real light of the candles in the tree. A music box played a Christmas carol and this was mixed with the sound of little bells tinkling… I was a very happy child!"
"Blue Hour" by Hilde van Schaardenburg

Materials:
Cotton (Oakshott Fabrics, Moda Grunge)
Wool
Textile Paint (Stewart Gill)
Techniques:
Patchwork
Longarm Quilting

Painting on Fabric
Inspiration:
The blue hour is the period of twilight in the morning or evening, around the nautical stage when the sun is at a significant depth below the horizon and residual, indirect sunlight takes on a predominantly blue shade, which differs from the one visible during most of a clear day.
I experienced this blue hour in the morning before sunrise in the Austrian Alps. It is just magical and enchanting.

3D Blocks by Karin Pope
This was Helen Butcher’s Block of the Month pattern which I completed in August 2021.
I like geometric designs and Helen’s Foundation Paper Pieced patterns were easy to use. I chose to make the larger of the two options we were given. Each block measures 4 inches finished.
6 inch Blocks, 45" x 45" by Karin Pope
Each 6” block in this quilt was entirely hand-sewn. It was a Block-a-week (49 of them) by the Bramble Patch, UK in 2018.
Each week we had to draft the block on graph paper from a diagram and accurately cut the pieces. Week one was straightforward and as the weeks passed, the blocks became more complicated and with smaller pieces.
I joined the blocks by machine and had it professionally quilted. It remains one of my most favourite quilts. Approx 45”square.
Advice for Quilter by Ingrid Huber
Advice for Quilter
Size: 280 cm x 230 cm
It was on a visit to Pennsylvania, US that Ingrid Huber's eye was caught by artefacts for sale offering Advice from Nature in the form of poems.
Ingrid explains...
Funny but also thoughtful advice was offered by animals, plants, landscape... whatever you can think of. I liked them a lot.
On the next leg of the trip, to IQS Houston, Ingrid's imagination was fired and a plan began to crystallise.
Here I got the idea about advice that might be given by the utensils I use as a quilter… On the flight home I made the first notes and within weeks I had the advice from sixteen utensils.
Back home, whilst researching Ilan Shamir's Advice from Nature, she came across Advice from a Quilt. Gaining permission to reproduce the poem, Ingrid's quilt design was complete!
Interspersed between the sampler-style colour blocks are Ingrid's own poems, crafted with gentle humour and offering pointers to help quilters honour their own talents.
This is one of my favourite quilts – it shows so much of my creativity. It's strange to praise myself, but I am really proud of this quilt!
